Who Is Pat Sheveland?
I was the 4th child born to my parents, or so I thought, until I found out when I was about 5 or 6 years old that I had another brother who had died before I was born.
So I didn't just have 3 older brothers, I had 4. My family never spoke about my brother and it was as if they buried his memory and his spirit when they buried his tiny little body.
I felt a deep connection to this brother when I learned of him and I spent time alone at the cemetery hanging out at his grave, which was about 100 feet away from the grave where my best friend Joey died when he was 3 and I was 5 years old.
I talked to these boys and imagined life with them had they not died. It was then that I started my path to be comfortable around death and dying. I became a Registered Nurse back in the early 80's and my time was spent holding the hands of the dying and comforting their families after their loved one passed.
I was deeply connected to the young men dying of AIDS back then where I would work the night shift and spend time hearing their stories and providing comfort and love during their final days.
